STORY
Ethiopia Washed and Natural coffees are consistently our top sellers by volume throughout the year. We believe this puts Blackroad among the Top 10 roasters in Korea in terms of Ethiopian coffee sales—the main reason being our high customer repurchase rate.
Why do so many customers choose our Ethiopian coffees?
Let’s take a closer look at Ethiopia:
- The birthplace of coffee
- Persistently low labor costs
- Unique processing methods made possible by nature
Ethiopia is the origin of coffee, especially Arabica. Geisha, SL28, Typica, and other prized varieties all trace their roots to Ethiopia.
Many of these cultivars still grow wild in Ethiopian forests—thus, Ethiopian coffees are often labeled as “Heirloom.”
This is why the price-to-quality ratio is so exceptional: you simply can’t find this level of coffee (close to 89 points) at this price anywhere else.
That value, however, is partly due to the fact that many Ethiopian coffee-producing regions remain quite underdeveloped. Local residents harvest wild coffee cherries growing naturally around their homes.
As a result, much Ethiopian coffee is considered “wild-grown”—one reason it remains affordable, even though the quality would justify prices 10 times higher. (We expect prices to rise sharply in the coming years.)
Ethiopia’s natural environment—altitude near 2,000m, dry climate, clearly defined wet and dry seasons—also enables large-scale, high-grade production.
Coffee can be dried on broad patios without the specialty infrastructure needed in humid regions.
At Blackroad, we don’t import Ethiopian coffees via direct trade. Instead, we select the very best from over 100 Ethiopian greens imported into Korea by reputable importers.
Why? To reduce uncertainty: coffee that tastes great at origin may not always taste as good after import. Our approach means almost no failed purchases; and if you’re not satisfied, we offer a full refund without hesitation.
Our goal is to bring unique value through coffee, not just to make a profit.
We hope each cup inspires your day!
